چکیده

In the standard stochastic frontier model with sample selection, the two components of the error term are assumed to be independent, and the joint distribution of the unobservable in the selection equation and the symmetric error term in the stochastic frontier equation is assumed to be bivariate normal. In this paper, we relax these assumptions by using two copula functions to model the dependences between the symmetric and inefficiency terms on the one hand, and between the errors in the sample selection and stochastic frontier equation on the other hand. Several families of copula functions are investigated, and the best model is selected using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). The methodology was applied to a sample of 200 rice farmers from Northern Thailand. The main findings are that (1) the doublecopula stochastic frontier model outperforms the standard model in terms of AIC, and (2) the standard model underestimates the technical efficiency scores, potentially resulting in wrong conclusions and ∗Corresponding author email: [email protected]

Modeling dependence between error components of the stochastic frontier model using copula: Application to intercrop coffee production in Northern Thailand

In the standard stochastic frontier model, the two-sided error term V and the one-sided technical inefficiency error term W are assumed to be independent. In this paper, we relax this assumption by modeling the dependence between V and W using copulas. Nine copula families are considered and their parameters are estimated using maximum simulated likelihood. The best model is then selected using...

Inference in stochastic frontier analysis with dependent error terms

Stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) is often used to estimate technical efficiency of entities such as firms, countries or municipalities. A potential dependence between the two components of the error term can be taken into account by a copula function. While estimation of the model is straightforward using the Corrected Ordinary Least Squares (COLS) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) methods, an open...

Wrong Skewness and Finite Sample Correction in Parametric Stochastic Frontier Models

In parametric stochastic frontier models, the composed error is specified as the sum of a two-sided noise component and a one-sided inefficiency component, which is usually assumed to be half-normal, implying that the error distribution is skewed in one direction. In practice, however, estimation residuals may display skewness in the wrong direction. Model respecification or pulling a new sampl...

A New Ridge Estimator in Linear Measurement Error Model with Stochastic Linear Restrictions

In this paper, we propose a new ridge-type estimator called the new mixed ridge estimator (NMRE) by unifying the sample and prior information in linear measurement error model with additional stochastic linear restrictions. The new estimator is a generalization of the mixed estimator (ME) and ridge estimator (RE). The performances of this new estimator and mixed ridge estimator (MRE) against th...

Maximum likelihood estimation of stochastic frontier models by the Fourier transform

The paper is concerned with several kinds of stochastic frontier models whose likelihood function is not available in closed form. First, with output-oriented stochastic frontier models whose one-sided errors have a distribution other than the standard ones (exponential or half-normal). The gamma and beta distributions are leading examples. Second, with input-oriented stochastic frontier models...
